Financial Safety Tips
CAPE Credit Union wants to make sure our members know that we take every precaution and safe guard to protect your money, account numbers and privacy. We have been very fortunate within our financial institution to not have much fraudulent activity. BUT WE CAN'T DO IT ALONE. Each member needs to be aware of the different scams and fraudulent activity that can happen.
      • Plastic card fraud is growing into a $100 million problem for credit unions around the country. The vendors we use for our debit card and credit caid programs along with CAPE have fraud detection systems that flag suspicious activity, also we keep daily spending limits on accounts to minimize possible losses as well. The culprits are using techniques call "phishing" and counterfeit "skimming", these are the primary contributors to plastic card fraud.
      • Each member can use precaution when using ATMs or swipe machines. When using these machines, feel along the edge of the insertion slot to make sure it hasn't been tampered with before inserting or swiping your card. If it looks like the equipment has attachments that have been added take precaution.
If your suspect that ID theft or account number theft has occurred CONTACT THE CREDIT UNION IMMEDIATELY. Other steps to follow are Place fraud alerts with credit bureaus. Check credit reports. Review accounts and use a standard affidavit to report disputes. Close accounts that have been tampered with. File a police report and maintain a file copy. File a complaint with the Federal Trade commission.
NEVER GIVE ANYONE YOUR ACCOUNT NUMBER UNLESS YOU INITIATE THE PHONE CALL OR THE ACTIVITY THAT MAY NEED YOUR ACCOUNT NUMBER!!!
Watch for the old fashion "Mail Fraud" and counterfeit schemes too. Not everything is done electronically. There are still thieves out there that call your home pretending to be an employee of a reputable company and there are thieves that mail counterfeit checks. CONTACT THE CREDIT UNION FIRST IF YOU EVER HAVE ANY QUESTIONS BEFORE GIVING OUT YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION.
